Beetlejuice (The Musical, The Musical, The Musical)
Review by Noah
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
After multiple hugely successful runs on Broadway, Beetlejuice has finally arrived in London's West End- and this time, the grotesque ghoul couldn't feel more alive...
Based on the 1988 cult classic film of the same name, the story focuses on teenager Lydia. After the passing of her mother, she must learn to deal with her grief and try to become closer with her seemingly careless father, all while juggling the move to a new house that has an unwanted ghost problem...step forward Beetlejuice!
David Fynn's take on the titular role hits all the right notes in a perfect blend between chaos and charisma. His ability to charm the audience with some laugh-out-loud bold jokes that feel straight out of a stand-up set has us feeling sympathy for a character who, in truth, deserves anything but. Both David Hunter and Chelsea Halfpenny provide further whimsical relief from the show's darker themes as they bounce off eachothers energy throughout, particularly so in the number "Fright of their Lives".
All of the characters are brilliantly brought together by the frightfully-talented Hannah Nordberg, who's portrayal of Lydia is equal parts sharp and sensitive, leading to some moments of genuine emotion. This, paired with some brilliant ballads, showcase her abilities to the max and leaves the audience engaged. Eddie Perfect's music and lyrics are, at times, just that- perfect! His work ensures Lydia can express her feelings freely through song, while Beetlejuice can also have his fun.
The gothic-horror comedy world of Tim Burton's creation is realised thanks to some incredible stage design. David Korins is no stranger to large, immersive sceneries but claims this show is "the most complex show I've ever worked on". His designs, which have been 14 years in the making, highlight the horror and haunting nature of Beetlejuice.
With frights, lights and poltergeists to keep you entertained all night long, this show is certainly fun, fun, fun!!!
