Ghosts

Review by Abi

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Lyric Hammersmith’s striking new production of Ghosts is a deeply affecting adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic, delivered through a bold contemporary lens. Known for his exploration of moral hypocrisy and social breakdown, Ibsen’s writing remains unflinching in its darkness—and this production (adapted by Gary Owen) fully embraces that, while daring to challenge and surprise its audience.

Director Rachel O’Riordan has shaped a version of Ghosts that feels unnervingly relevant. The modernisation is seamless, illuminating the play’s themes of shame, repression and inherited trauma—in a way that resonates powerfully with a modern audience. What was most jarring, and yet strangely brilliant, is the humour. The cast were able to bring moments of light to even the heaviest of scenes, leaving the audience caught between discomfort and amusement. This ongoing lingering tension between humour and horror heightens the play’s deeply tragic events.

Merle Hensel's set design is an utter triumph, making the theatrical space feel both intimate and oppressive, reflecting many of the relationships we see unfold. The simplicity of the design forces the audience into a closer connection with the piece, a connection enhanced by its first rate cast. Every silence, glance and outburst lands with huge impact thanks to emotionally intelligent performances that fill the space completely.

The entire ensemble is incredibly strong, but it’s Callum Scott Howells who steals the show. His performance is raw, unpredictable, and unbelievably versatile—transitioning from vulnerability to heartbreak with an emotional force that leaves the audience breathless. It’s one of those rare performances that feels truly lived-in, rather than acted.

This Ghosts is not just a revival—it’s a revelation. Complex, unsettling, and just as haunting as it is enlightening.
