Māyā: The Musical

By Abi

I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive industry workshop presentation of the brand new show, Maya The Musical.

Set in 1930s India & Britain, this piece tells the story of Maya Mehta, a poet inspired to use her writing to make a change. With Ghandi’s following and influence growing in India, Maya joined the Salt March or Salt Satyagraha of 1930, a 24 day march in non-violent resistance against the British salt monopoly.

The energy in the room was positively palpable, as we were treated to an exclusive look at this epic story by Cheeyang Ng & Eric Sorrels. The rousing score by Cheeyang Ng was rhythmically really interesting and its use of both Western and traditional Indian scales was a wonderful merging of both East & West.

I'm excited to see the next stages of this beautiful production as it continues to grow and develop. Maya & her allies’ commitment to change left me reminded that small actions really can lead to great reactions.
