Paddington The Musical

Review by Sam

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of the most loved characters from literature is pulled directly from the page and magically brought to life on stage, in Jessica Swale, Luke Sheppard and Tom Fletcher's marmalade covered masterpiece.

Based on Michael Bond's book series and the award-winning film, the show follows a lost bear from Peru as he arrives in London in search of a new home. There are truly not enough words to describe just why this show is so spectacular but believe me when I say it's PAW-some in every way.

Sheppard has directed a perfect family musical which is a delight from beginning to end. There is not a weak link in this masterfully crafted chain of creativity, from a catchy score to jaw-dropping scene design, this show has it all. Swale's book is bursting with heart and is quintessentially British, placing the dazzling diversity of the capital city on full display. Fletcher's stunning score adds to this with the earworm that is, "The Rhythm of London". Along with the creative elements, the entire ensemble is a delight to behold, with each cast member aiding the magic of theatre and helping bring Paddington to life.

Crafted by the genius Tahra Zafar, the puppetry and performance of Paddington is the standout element of an already phenomenal show. Played by Arti Shah on-stage and voiced by James Hameed, the two work in perfect unison to breathe life into this little bear with charm, pushing the limits of what theatre can achieve. For the performance I attended, Abbie Purvis played the on-stage alternate and was captivating beyond words. What Purvis achieves through puppetry is utterly magnetising and transports adults to child-like wonder.

Not since Matilda has an original British musical burst onto the scene in this way, but Paddington had me smiling and crying more than I've ever done before. It is more than just a show, it is a reminder of the powerful impact theatre can have, as it fills audience hearts with love, joy and kindness, whilst leaving them craving more.

Paddington's tag says, "please look after this bear", and I have no doubt that the West End will be taking good care of him for many years.
