The Bodyguard

A global pop superstar hires a former Secret Service agent to protect her from a dangerous stalker in this stage adaptation of the 1992 feature film, The Bodyguard.
The production is joyful and vibrant, packed with energy from start to finish. It's bursting at the seams with big vocals, big drama and plenty of 90s nostalgia. The Law & Order-style tension running throughout the show is simply brilliant, featuring a narrative that has a real edge, and supported by a genuinely chilling performance from James-Lee Harris as ‘The Stalker’. Vocally however. the production was a mixed bag.
Sidonie Smith as Rachel Marron unfortunately struggled to consistently deliver a strong vocal performance. Whilst there were certainly some moments of utter greatness, her vocals sadly lacked the support it sounded as if it required. Stepping into the shoes of such a huge leading lady is certainly no easy feat, but on this occasion the vocal inconsistency was sadly disappointing. However, the production truly comes alive in the larger ensemble numbers.
The choreography was a real spectacle, slick and full of attitude, with “I’m Every Woman” as an absolute standout highlight. Sasha Monique as Nicki Marron was excellent, bringing fantastic presence to the stage along with stellar vocals to match. However, the real star of the show, was Cale Cole as Fletcher. The young star completely steals every scene they are in, with confidence, charm and moves well beyond his years!
While some vocals didn’t quite land, the atmosphere, choreography and sheer feel-good factor makes for a great night out. Not perfect - but an undeniably entertaining night of theatre.
