Tim Minchin: Songs The World Will Never Hear
Review by Sam
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Celebrating two decades since his explosive arrival onto the British comedy scene, Tim Minchin proves once again why he is THE greatest musical comedian working today!
Promising an evening of love songs, reflection and unforgettable humour, Minchin looks back at his illustrious career across a 3-hour tour-de-force showcase, explaining how a Perth-based pianist ended up building one of the most eclectic and extraordinary careers in British entertainment. Detailing a career as wide spanning as Minchin's is no easy feat, yet he manages to do so in the most entrancing and engaging way, utilising his trademark lyrical trickery and razor-sharp wit to send audiences into a frenzy of laughter, song after song.
Fan-favourites a-plenty are scattered throughout the extended comedy concert extravaganza, but in traditional Minchin-style a fresh and unique twist has been added to elevate songs to new heights. Minchin's country-song about Jesus ('The Good Book') has the hilarious addition of lyrics and emojis accompanying the controlled and meticulous planned chaos. Alongside other hits such as 'Darkside' and 'Rock and Roll Nerd', audiences are treated to a glimpse of some of Minchin's most acclaimed side projects. Most notably from his work on Matilda, Minchin performs the Act 2 song 'Revolting Children' following its TikTok viral fame from the film adaptation.
This nostalgic look back at his career also allows Minchin to promote his upcoming album, Time Machine, featuring an array of songs written in his 20s along with some of his most loved comedy classics. One of his earliest songs ('The Song of The Masochist’) is performed boldly, with the improvised funk of his accompanying 5-piece band showcasing their skill and musicality.
Condensing twenty years into two hours was always going to be a task, especially for someone with such an expansive and genre-spanning career as Tim Minchin, but with a celebration of songs and comedy, old, new and unheard, one thing is made certain - this Rock & Roll Nerd knows how to put on a show that WILL be heard.
