Waitress

Review by Brad

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last night's performance at the New Wimbledon Theatre was anchored by a great performance from Carrie Hope Fletcher as Jenna Hunterson in the 10th Anniversary Waitress tour. Her rendition of "She Used to Be Mine" left the crowd clapping, whooping and cheering through tears - a really powerful moment in an ever-strong piece of theatre.

Sara Bareilles's musical score is full of beautiful music and soul-touching harmonies, perfectly paired with Jessy Nelson's heartfelt, well-crafted book. The production is supported by a really strong cast, especially the portrayals of Dawn (Evelyn Hoskins) and Ogie (Mark Anderson).

Whilst his comic timing was fine, Les Dennis’s performance of "Take it Like an Old Man" felt more akin to your grandad struggling through karaoke on Boxing Day, which pulled the audience slightly out of an otherwise very emotional moment. Despite a few technical mishaps, such as stage doors bouncing open inconveniently, the show remains a beautifully directed piece. By the end of the night, it was hard to find a dry eye in the audience.

Waitress remains as warm, charming and life-affirming as ever. Not one to be missed!
