Hadestown The Musical
Review by Brad
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Capturing a live performance that’s known for bringing its audience in on the story from the beginning is no easy feat. This pro-shot of Hadestown stands as a truly remarkable theatrical capture.
The camerawork is unlike anything I’ve seen for a proshot - fluid, intimate, dynamic, endlessly interesting (at times you forget there’s a proscenium arch between you and the story, you are just in it). All the technical elements of the production showcase the soaring scale of the set and the quietest nuances of the performance. Every movement ‘up top’, to the staggering lighting ‘way down’, is rendered with breathtaking cinematic clarity. The proshot’s director, Brett Sullivan, knew exactly what audiences needed to see, and when to let them breathe. Rather than merely recording the stage, the filming actively invites you into the storytelling, making the audience feel as though they are part of the myth itself.
The return of the original Broadway cast elevates this capture into something truly magical. For a show fundamentally centered on cycles, tragedy, and the relentless, hopeful act of trying again—no matter how the story ends—seeing this original ensemble step back into the roles feels unbelievably poignant. Eva Noblezada and Reeve Carney reignite their fragile, heartbreaking chemistry as Eurydice and Orpheus, while André De Shields channels timeless, mythic authority as Hermes. Patrick Page’s gravelly bass and Amber Gray’s electric Persephone remain unparalleled. Their reunion on stage adds an extra layer of emotional gravitas, emphasizing that even in the face of inevitable fate, the song is always worth singing again.
With Anais Mitchell’s rich, jazz-infused score sounding as stunning as ever, this pro-shot is a glorious, indelible monument to one of the defining musicals of our time. Simply essential viewing.
