Top 5 Plays of 2025

By Sam

2025 is drawing to a close and we’re looking back at what has been a truly amazing year of theatre. There have been some phenomenal plays that have stayed with us long after the curtain call, making it really difficult to narrow down a best of list! But after much deliberation here we go…

David Ireland’s critically acclaimed, highly provocative, and deeply comical new play was one of the most intellectual comedies of the year at SohoPlace, with two of this country’s finest dramatic talents at its helm.

The theatrical titans of comedy (Mischief Theatre), delivered another gut bustlingly funny new caper featuring some of the most original slapstick humour the West End has seen in quite some time.

Jamie Lloyd brought Shakespeare back to Drury Lane in style, with one of the most viral, boldest, funniest and PINKest revivals of recent years, featuring a standout slapstick performance from the god of mischief himself, Tom Hiddleston.

Asa Butterfield made his stage debut in a play which took audiences on a rollercoaster of emotions, both deeply moving and hillariously playful, in a one man show that had utter theatrical magic woven into every creative bone.

Jack Holden and Ed Stambollouian’s true crime thriller is a blood pulsing, mesmerising masterpiece of theatrical genius, which whilst being an astonishing achievement of what live theatre can achieve, easily cemented itself as play of the year.

Some other honourable mentions that narrowly missed out on the top spot:

🎭 Punch

🎭 A Midsummer Nights Dream (Barbican)

🎭 Inside No.9 - Stage/Fright

🎭 Stereophonic

🎭 Retrograde
